Ever heard this before?
“I don’t want to get too big and bulky.”
It’s the #1 concern of people told for the first time they should lift weights to burn fat.
You may have even thought that yourself…
But to anyone in the know, this is crazy…
It’s like learning how to drive and you suddenly think you’re going to become a Formula 1 driver.
It makes zero sense.
Let’s break this down a bit:
The only thing that can make you ‘big and bulky’ is your diet…
If you eat in a caloric surplus, you’ll get bigger.
If you eat in a caloric deficit, you’ll get smaller.
It’s that simple…
And if you’d like to burn some calories then you can add lifting weights into your routine…
Which (if you’re in a deficit) can put you even further in a deficit, and you’ll lose weight even faster.
Yes, you may gain a couple of kilos of muscle (which can take months, maybe years) but it will not make you big and bulky.
The only way to get big and bulky is to lift weights for a LONG time paired with a caloric surplus for a LONG time.
This will not happen to you… (unless you choose to go that route, nothing wrong with it)
On another note:
If you hate cardio and other forms of calorie-burning exercises, you’ll probably love weight training.
It’s fun, it’s easy to track progress and it burns hundreds of calories.
We have a range of people who use weights here at CD Fitness. Professional athletes, Busy Mums with kids (who need to burn calories quickly), our own PTs… the list goes on.
They’re an amazing tool and can be beneficial for a multitude of things. You’re missing out by not using them.
